September is Oral Health Month

Oral Health Month is an annual event created by Colgate - Palmolive and is usually held in September each year.

A recent report from the World Health Organization (WHO) cites tooth decay as the most common chronic disease on the planet, affecting five billion people, or nearly 80 percent of the world’s population. Thousands of young children across the country suffer from tooth decay that leads to illness and absenteeism. According to the FDI’s Oral Health Atlas, 88% of school children in South Africa reported having experienced toothache in their time at school.

Oral Health Month seeks to raise awareness about good oral health habits

Tackling important issues such as tooth decay and cavities, plaque and bad breath.

It aims to help people understand the cause, symptoms and conditions of dental problems as well as ways to improve poor habits. Oral Health Month is designed to inform and educate on the importance of keeping teeth and gums healthy. During Oral Health Month Colgate, the South African Dental association and the Department of Basic Education, will teach and raise awareness about good oral health habits. These activities support the South African government’s stated ambition to increase the number of children aged six who are cavity-free by up to 50%, and is linked to Colgate’s aim of achieving ZERO cavities together.
